Manisha Koirala was to reprise her role from the original Tamil version of the movie, "Mudhalvan" (1999). But she was busy with other projects like "Grahan" (2001) and "Lajja" (2001). Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Raveena Tandon and Preity Zinta were considered for the role. But all had date issues. Thus Rani Mukerji got the role and replaced Koirala.
